How can math, science, and physical education, give students an awareness of health, muscle development, and caloric intake?
How can this unit educate students through service learning?
Will students be walking away with valuable information relevant to the rest of their lives?
By understanding the biology of our muscles, proper exercise techniques, and caloric intake, we can take charge of our health and our happiness.

7. How can algebra be incorporated into muscle building exercises?
8. How can the understanding of muscle systems contribute to more effective muscle building?
With the alarming number of growing rates in child obesity, and diabetes, it is quite clear that children need to be given tools to help improve their health for immediate and long term effects of their bodies. By the three different subjects of Math, Biology, and Physical Education, we believe that we can help take a step forward in educating the importance of exercise, as well as build a more meaningful and enjoyable unit for students that can be used for the rest of their lives. Adolescents at this age are at a pivotal point, how they treat their bodies now is going to reflect through the rest of their years. In Algebra, students will have the opportunity to learn the equations and importance of math in health. They will learn how to calculate their body fat percentage, VO2max, BMI, caloric need, and caloric expenditure. From here students will be able to calculate their exercise needs and plan goals to improve their mathematical numbers. The goals each student individually wants to achieve will then be the bases of what they will learn in Physical Education and their final project at the end of the unit. Meanwhile, in Biology class, students will be learning how muscles contract while exercising, how new muscle tissue is built, and the basic anatomy of the body and its muscle groups. While students are learning the anatomy of muscles, on the same day, they will be presented exercises that improve strength for those anatomical muscles. In Physical Education, students will be learning proper techniques to perform exercises and how to tie them all together to create an individualized exercise plan to reach the goals they determined in Algebra class. In addition, students will learn about the difficulties amputees face in light of these exercises we are learning. They will learn how to critically think about the material in order to create modifications to best suit people with different amputees. At the end of the unit, the students will be able to present a final project that encompasses all they have mastered in the unit. They will present a brochure that ties in everything they have learned. They will be able to present this brochure to people of the community and help educate others on the importance of proper exercise, how fitness improves help, as well as create awareness of those with physical disabilities.
